Extracting files

Choose a destination

Select the entries you need, or choose to extract the whole archive, then choose an output folder in the native picker. You can also drag entries out to another app or Finder when that destination accepts file drags.

Extraction runs in the background and can be cancelled. Files are staged before being published into the destination. Review any destination conflict before replacing an existing file, and keep a backup of important data.

Passwords and split volumes

An encrypted archive may ask for a password before listing names or when extracting an entry. A wrong password can appear as a data or checksum error; verify it with the sender.

For split archives, keep all volumes together and open the first volume (for example, .7z.001, .zip.001, or the first RAR part). Select the containing folder if the app needs permission to read neighboring parts. Missing or renamed parts can prevent extraction.

Space and limits

Allow space for the extracted contents and temporary staging. Compressed size can be much smaller than the expanded size. The default extraction size limit is 64 GB and can be adjusted in Settings; increase it only for archives you trust and when there is enough free space.

The engine rejects unsafe paths such as absolute paths, parent-directory traversal, and symbolic-link extraction. These safeguards do not make an unknown file safe to run. macOS quarantine information is propagated where applicable.
